Venue Spotlight: Good Roots Farm and Gardens

It’s charming, rustic and peaceful … a perfect location for your wedding!  Visit Good Roots Farm and Gardens, a warm, welcoming, and relaxed venue near Brookings, South Dakota. The simplicity and generous hospitality at Good Roots Farm and Gardens sets them apart if you’re wanting a true barn wedding near Brookings. They happily anticipate your special day and consider it a pleasure to provide this amazing venue for your memory-making events.

Location: Good Roots is just 1.5 miles North of Brookings, SD on Medary Avenue.

Capacity: Explore the 93 year-old restored barn situated on several acres of Bill and Julie Ross’s 40-acre farm. The Loft, with original vaulted ceiling, has elegant lighting/windows and old-school maple flooring. It can seat 185 ceremony guests (including a generous processional aisle) or 100 “banquet style” with chairs and 8-foot rectangle tables. It’s also perfect for lots of dancing shoes!

The rustic main floor of the barn is often used for welcoming, socializing, dining…whatever you’d like. Banquet style seating accommodates about 100, as well. It has a vintage movable bar, unique stairway, and old galvanized wash tubs for ice, presentation tables, and decor that can be dressed up or down. There’s even a place to keep your ice cold. New indoor handicap-accessible bathrooms are attractive and convenient.  A “get-ready” room is under construction now!

Here is a peek at what one couple used the main floor for — a welcome area with their guestbook, donuts, apple cider, bottled water, and lots of hugging. 🙂

Both levels have built-in audio and you are welcome to use the traveling sound system and hand-held mic /stand. Air conditioning on the main floor and heat on both levels offer seasonal comfort.

The beautiful patio adjacent to the barn serves as a supplemental eating space or lighted dance floor under the stars. The level ground on the property has welcomed many an outdoor reception.  So far, couples have used a handful of unique spaces on the property for their wedding ceremony.  There’s also plenty of room for a large rental tent to accommodate up to 300 guests in one covered area.

Enjoy two adjacent, spacious, well-appointed yards. There are  two  gazebos, a  flower circle that seats 200, trees including a “wedding “willow, yard games- even a big ole belfry bell to ring in the celebration. There’s plenty of parking and lots of and lots of picturesque photo opportunity sites too!

Rentals Included: The rental fee includes 8 ft. banquet style tables and white chairs for 200 guests for use indoors or out. You can also rent antique dinner plates, glassware, silverware, and wood rounds. Hayrides and the gabion fire pit provide extra fun for a nominal charge.

Catering and Alcohol Policy: How about eats? Good Roots can create savory, custom wood-fired pizzas fired in their outdoor ovens and serve them up buffet-style for up to a group of 50 people. It’s perfect for a rehearsal dinner or small wedding party! Many pizza toppings are harvested fresh from their organic gardens. Inquire about in-house catering or secure your own caterer.  You also have access to do light food prep in the adjacent commercial kitchen and you get dedicated refrigerator space to boot. Regarding the bubbly —you provide the beer and wine products for your guests.  You may also offer one signature cocktail. Otherwise, no hard liquor.

Flexibility on Setup/Take Down Times: Your signature on a contract and half payment down secures your date on the website calendar. The Rosses are open for bookings from May through November annually.  Lots of couples rent from Friday to Sunday noon (which offers LOTS of flexibility on set up and take down times), but renting by the day is fine, as well.

Take it from me…you won’t find NICER people than Bill and Julie. They are “Midwest Nice” at its finest and are incredible to work with. They want your wedding to be as special as you are — and will go to great lengths to make sure it is. A wonderful venue option!
