Can I tell you the cutest rainy wedding day story? Okay, good.
We all agree that we don’t want it to rain on our wedding day (I mean, yes, it’s good luck), but when it happens like it did on Hannah and Austin’s wedding day…it makes for the cutest story!
Hannah and Austin chose The Hutton House in Medicine Lake, Minnesota for a million reasons, but mostly because of its outdoor plaza courtyard ceremony space and its modern, sleek, clean, white, minimalist-yet-luxurious indoor space. I swear, every inch of that venue has been designed! (It had amazing sophisticated wallpaper and patterned carpet in every room!) Plus, they chose it for its proximity to downtown Minneapolis and Medicine Lake (amazing photo ops!) nearby! It fit their black and white and babies breath wedding perfectly. Hannah and Austin could get ready, take portraits, have the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing all in one location.
The Fireside room is just beyond the entrance with a floor-to-ceiling white brick fireplace and overlooks the outdoor plaza with sliding glass doors. Walk a little further and you’re in the Lakeside Room, which was perfect for their 100-person reception (although it holds closer to 200-250!)
So, now you have the vision — an outdoor ceremony on the bistro-lit turf grass and an indoor reception with the doors opening to the plaza patio for cocktail hour (with landscaping, lawn games, fire pit, and mobile bar). It was going to be perfect!
It started to sprinkle that morning, so getting ready in their bride and groom suites was a perfect place to wait out the rain. We kept an eye on the weather, but ended up doing the vow readings indoors and the first look *just* outside on the courtyard under the awning. We also did the first look with Hannah’s dad and bridesmaids in front of the fireplace! She walked down the grand staircase and the first looks were perfect! We were going to make this work!!
The rain let up for the briefest moment, so we got the entire wedding party outside of The Hutton House for some great photos! Talk about good attitudes and huge smiles to keep this rain away! Plus, there is a beautiful hedge of hydrangea outside the venue building that made a gorgeous backdrop!
One of the policies at The Hutton House is that they check the weather at noon the day before your wedding and if the chance of rain is 50% or more, they move the ceremony indoors. It was a non-wishy-washy way of making the decision for us, so we decorated the ceremony indoors! Hitch Studio is ordained in Minnesota now (yay!), so Renee was able to perform the ceremony for Hannah and Austin. (A love as pure as theirs is so easy to talk about!) There were tears. There were laughs. There was love.
Afterwards, the cocktail hour happened indoors as people mingled throughout the space. As people entered the Lakeside Room (the reception space), they were awed by the babies breath and disco balls hanging from the ceiling! It was so beautiful! Each guest had a custom menu printed by Hitch Studio. We love designing custom stationery! Hannah and Austin’s invitations were printed with black and white ink on black paper. A very tone-on-tone, classy look. So we designed the menus with each guests’ name on top in black ink and their meal choice on their menu! Everyone knew exactly where to sit because of the amazing seating chart that Hitch Studio set up and designed as well!
After dinner, the surprises kept on coming! They had a s’mores bar for dessert and a champagne tower! The night played on with dancing and laughing and their first dance indoors (instead of outdoors) since it was still spitting rain.
BUT THEN. THE MAGIC HAPPENED. At the end of a long, amazing, rainy day, Hannah and Austin came up to me at the end of the night. The plan to was to have their final dance indoors to keep everyone dry. While the courtyard was dampened from the rain, their spirits never were! They asked if they could have their last dance outside on the courtyard, under the bistro lights and sprinkling rain…by themselves! Remember the glass doors I mentioned earlier? All the guests watched them smile and dance in the rain from behind the glass doors! It was SO SPECIAL!! And then when the dance was over, we made an indoor tunnel of people that they ran through, laughing and soaking in the most beautiful moments of the day! They totally made the best of their wet and special wedding day!
Hannah and Austin, we wish you a lifetime of love. And we know that nothing – not rain on your wedding day or changing plans – will affect that. Your love is as true as it gets! Truly!
Although we are South Dakota wedding planners, we LOVE traveling to Minnesota wedding venues like The Hutton House! Our mileage fees are minimal…and…you get what you pay for. We got so many compliments from the vendors we worked with about being “so good at communicating” and “such a fun experience!” Awwww… we loved it! We were there from beginning to end and at rehearsal. If you’re looking for a full wedding planner or a day-of coordinator, consider Hitch Studio!
